Fall movies rated

Due to the intoxicating aroma of popcorn that forces you to spend money and the six dollars for admission, the movie theater can get quite pricey. But are the movies out in theaters now worth the time and money?
I’ve been working at my local cinema for over two years. I’ve seen my fair share of both good and bad movies, and it’s made me a relatively tough critic. However, when it comes to movies, everyone has a different opinion. Here are a few of mine.
This summer did not impress me much — it seemed to be flooded with sequels: “Jeepers Creepers 2,” “American Wedding,” “Terminator 3,” and “Freddy Vs. Jason,” just to name a few. In a way it’s almost expected that summer movies be carefree and not require much thought.
Thankfully, the fall premiers are boasting many all-star casts. I’ll admit, I was drawn to “Once Upon a Time in Mexico” due to the fact that Johnny Depp starred along with Antonio Banderas and Salma Hayek. It’s an action flick about a high stakes drug war, yet it seems a little over-the-top at times. Entertaining? You bet. My Grade: C+
“Underworld” features vampires and werewolves played by Kate Beckinsale and Scott Speedman. The two fall in love despite the war between creatures. It is yet another action-packed movie, however the fight scenes seem reminiscent of “The Matrix.” Is it loud and action packed? Yes. Would I pay to see it in a theater? Maybe. My Grade: C
Taking a break from the action genre is “Matchstick Men” starring Nicolas Cage and Alison Lohman. Critics have rated it one of the highest out of the films in theaters now and it is definitely due to the talented actors and director. Cage plays a con man planning a huge scam when his teenage daughter shows up unexpectedly.
It is entertaining yet the story seemed thin and empty. Nevertheless, it was made up for in the cast and their acting techniques. Would I pay to see it in a theater on a Saturday afternoon? Yes. My Grade: B
Judging from promotions and previews, there are many good movies coming to theaters this fall and winter.
Stay tuned for the latest because the best of 2003 is yet to come!
