John Knudson, 23, of Joliet won the fifth annual Illinois Valley Community College 4-mile Cross Country Classic Saturday and Cherie House, 25, of Princeton set a new women’s record.
Knudson finished in 22:43 and ahead of 41-year-old Pat Koerner of Bourbonnais who finished in second at 23:59. Brett Barbour, 18, was third, Steve Dellett, 44, fourth, Joe Hart, 48, fifth, and Cecil Taylor, sixth.
House finished in 27:39 to break Julie Saorin of Ottawa’s one-year-old course record. Kerri Brady, 32, was second and Mary Anderson, 38, finished third.
Race director Dennis Summers said 76 participants finished the race and 88 entered.
“I was very happy to see Cherie House break the course record. Everyone loved the new T-shirts and there were no injuries,” said Summers. “I would like to see more runners who like cross country style races participate. This is one of central Illinois’ most unique courses featuring running through a building, through a pine forest and all around our scenic campus.”
Age group winners not mentioned above included Charles Kerley, 58; Brian Peterson, 13; Phil Ernat, 36; Bob Steele, 54; Rick Brodine, 63; Sonny Barroso, 26; Sherry Steen, 44; Gary Barrera, 31; Lynn Lulay, 55; Michele Gaeta, 35; Karen Grothen, 47; Barb Gurtler, 69; Chris Zinn, 19; Toni Colmone, 12; and Deb Wackerline, 50.
