IVCC’s Early Childhood Education Center continues to be one of the busiest programs on campus.
The program, which was threatened by IVCC’s fiscal crisis, relies heavily upon fund-raisers and aid from parents.
This semester the Early Childhood Education Center sponsored a link sale in early November.
The program has also conducted a number of fund-raising projects including the selling of Little Caesar’s pizza, cookie dough, flower bulbs and monthly book orders.
An upcoming fund-raiser will be a Books Are Fun sale on Nov. 25.
The children in the education center are currently studying how to build a house from start to finish, according to center director Marilyn Worsley. They learn valuable information such as the workers, plans and materials needed to complete the project.
Some parents of the students are carpenters and contractors and have become involved in class discussions regarding topics related to their field of work. Parental assistance also helped immensely in making the fund-raisers successful, Worsley said.
The Early Childhood Education Center has been existence for six years. In February, the IVCC Board of Trustees eliminated the full-time position of Sallee Beneke in the ECE. Reorganization of the center was expected to result in $20,000 in savings. Usage fees also were increased and the decision made to close the center for two summer months.
