Phi Theta Kappa: Ottawan wins leadership award

       Illinois Valley Community College student Mark Mansfield of Ottawa has been named a 2010 Leaders of Promise Scholar.
    Leaders of Promise receive $1,000 to facilitate completion of associate degrees and participation in Phi Theta Kappa programs.
    Mansfield originally planned to pursue a forensics position in the private sector but after completing a summer internship with the Ottawa Police Department decided to pursue a career in law enforcement. 
    "I intend on being a life-long student and will also pursue a bachelor's degree in business," Mansfield added.
Mansfield, the father of a 16-year-old daughter, has a 3.9 GPA and works as a production supervisor at PetSmart Distribution in Ottawa.
    Biology lab instructor LeeAnn Johnson is one of the advisors to Phi Theta Kappa. Students can contact her to learn more about the academic honors society for two-year colleges.
