The women’s volleyball team opened its season Aug. 28-29 at the DuPage Invitational tournament in Glen Ellyn, compiling a 2-2 record.
The Eagles defeated Harper in two games, both 25-22, on Aug. 28.
Tori Pflibsen led the Eagles in the game with 10 points, five kills and five aces. Mandy Towne of Ottawa added four kills in the match. Meredith Rounds led the team in blocks with two.
The Eagles also defeated Minnesota West in two matches, by scores of 25-18 and 25-17, on Aug. 29.
In that match, Aimee Piontek had eight points and Pflibsen, seven.
Pflibsen also recorded three aces and Piontek, two. Pflibsen contributed six kills; Towne, four; and Piontek, four.
The team’s two losses came to Madison Area Technical, 16-25 and 13-25, and College of DuPage, 29-31 and 29-31.
In the Madison Area Technical game, Pflibsen led with seven points and three kills. Rounds added four kills and two blocks.
In the College of DuPage game, Riley Gapinski led the team with 12 points. Casey Benckendorf contributed an ace, and Pflibsen recorded 11 kills.
The team opens its home season on Tuesday, Sept. 8 with a 6 p.m. match vs. Clinton.
The Eagles are coached this year by Julie Sherbeyn, who also is a health and wellness instructor on campus.
Sherbeyn said the transition has been “relatively smooth” since many of the players knew her as an instructor or from her time coaching club volleyball.
“We did a lot of stuff over the summer together,” said Sherbeyn. “I got to know them a little better. “
The team has five returning sophomores playing together including Gapinski, a defensive specialist; Rounds, a middle hitter; Towne, outside hitter; Kayla Conroy, libero; and Pflibsen, outside hitter.
