Trustee’s advice: Get involved

TRUSTEE'S CORNER
By Cheyanne Smith
IVCC Student Trustee, Sept. 3, 2009

Welcome students to a new year at IVCC. I am Cheyanne Smith, the Student Trustee. This means that I am a student government member and I also sit on the board of trustees.
If any student ever has questions or concerns, they should direct those to SGA members or me personally.
I am highly involved in the school. I am a member of Phi Theta Kappa, a student ambassador, staff member of the IV Leader, SGA member and I also am a peer tutor in the writing center. I encourage all to get involved in some shape or form on campus.
If you are a freshman and interested in running for a position on the Student Government, petitions are due by 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 4.
With the fall term just beginning, many fun and interesting things are taking place on campus. Student Government organized Spirit Day for all students on Aug. 25. Spirit Day included events like sand in a bottle, wax hands, trampolines with bungee cords, and free pizza and soda.
The freshman student Convocation also took place, where teachers and administrators informed students on how to be a prepared student and of teacher expectations, as well as a general push for students to get involved throughout campus.
This year student enrollment is up 4 percent. I welcome every new student and hope that they make the most of their time while here at IVCC.
One new important notice for students is concerning the Pell Grant. Many students at IVCC and all around the country receive the Federal Pell Grant. The Federal Pell Grant program provides need-based grants to low income, undergraduate students.
The program is in place to encourage post secondary schooling. Like any other grant, the money does not have to be repaid. This year the government has increased the number of people who may apply for the grant and has also slightly increased the amount that each student receives.
The Student Government Association office is located in Room C-108, off the cafeteria. If you would like to speak with an SGA member please call 224-0247 to schedule an appointment, or come to the room during office hours.
If you would like more information about the SGA and how to become involved, please contact Cory Tomasson, coordinator of student activities, at Cory_Tomasson@ivcc.edu.
