College Democrats lobby governor about MAP

 Nov. 5, 2009

Members of the IVCC College Democrats got a chance to put their political skills to work Oct. 12 when they lobbied the Illinois governor.
The IVCC College Democrats attended the Bureau County Democrat’s annual John Mitchell Dinner in Spring Valley on Oct. 12 as the guests of State Rep. Frank Mautino.
In his remarks to those in attendance, Mautino introduced the College Democrats and commended them for their service.
The guest of honor at the dinner was Illinois Governor Pat Quinn.
The College Democrats had an opportunity to speak with the governor. They asked for his support in restoring funding for the MAP Grants and explained that the grants are vital to many of the students at IVCC.
Gov. Quinn told the students he was doing everything in his power to restore the funding and expected to have a solution in place before Oct. 19.
State lawmakers eventually voted to restore funding for the MAP grants. Several other IVCC students also were able to lobby state lawmakers as part of a Student Government Association effort.
