Fantasy Football: A necessary evil

With the beginning of school now upon us a few things come to mind. End of summer, new classes, new faces, for some of us a whole new school.
For those of us who are less worried about academics means football season is finally here. Most importantly fantasy football is finally here.
Fantasy football, whether you like it or not, is a large reason the NFL is the most popular sport in the United States today. Hundreds of thousands of people from every walk of life participate in drafts around the globe each year.
TV stations devote shows and actually pay people to tell you who you should pick and why Stephen Jackson is a better pick than say Joseph Addai. There are dozens of magazines with countless tidbits of information, ranking each player differently. There are even different types of leagues. Auction leagues, leagues that only reward for touchdowns, yardage leagues, points per reception leagues, I have even been in a league where they reward points for the teams offensive line.
Fantasy football isn’t for the faint of heart. Doesn’t matter who your pro team is you find yourself secretly hoping Adrian Petersen breaks this 45 yard run for a touchdown.
You scream at your defense to do a better job of tackling, but inside you are smiling and cheering because that touchdown just put you into the playoffs.
You start to question yourself as a humanitarian.
You feel soulless because you want the opposing teams player to suffer a career threatening injury. Hey… that guy driving the cart looks bored. It takes a special breed of person to play this game. Do you have the guts? The savvy? The sheer instincts to win?
If you are a first time player ask yourselves these questions. Then, if you feel up to it, you can sign up for free at many sites (espn.com) and put your money where your mouth is.
