First day new school jitters fade fast

Laura Fultz

My, my how time seems to fly. It seems like just yesterday that I was starting my first year at Ottawa Township High School, and now, I’m starting my first year at Illinois Valley Community College.
I was a little intimidated to be going to a new school, but I know that is normal. Rachel Jones from Tiskilwa shared the same first day jitters. “I was really nervous at first, but after my first class, I really enjoyed the casual atmosphere and I’m really looking forward to more classes.”
I was really nervous at first, because I wasn’t sure if I was going to know anyone in any of my classes. I was pleasantly surprised that almost everyone was in the same boat and that conversations just started up easily, and it was easy to talk to new people. You never know who you can relate to unless you talk to them, so take the initiative and talk to them first!
The first month of classes is always the worst. It always takes a little while to get back into school mode. I know that it is hard for me to comprehend that I have to write a four-page paper the first week of school, but if you don’t jump into the flow of school, you’ll never get back in.
The first month of school is usually when a lot of clubs get started too. Don’t worry if you don’t know anyone that is interested in joining the clubs you’re interested in. Clubs are designed to bring people together who share similar interests. And there are tons of clubs and organizations too.
“There seem to be a lot of fantastic clubs I’d like to join,” said Josh Williams from Ottawa. So no matter what you’re first impressions of Illinois Valley Community College were, try to make the best of it. Have a good semester everyone!
