Volleyball team bands together after rough start

The IVCC volleyball season did not start out the way most players would want it. Two players were removed from the squad and four others were suspended for seven games after pictures were posted on a social Web site.
“The beginning of the season was real difficult,” said freshman player Meredith Rounds, “and it took time for us to adjust to it; however, I think it brought our team together in a way. Everyone is there for someone else and if we make a mistake, someone is right there to pick them up.”
That team concept is echoed by many players.
“I definitely see change after the beginning of the season,” said sophomore leader Heather Safranski. “We are a lot closer and there is a different bond that been formed.”
“We started out rough, but once we got everything together, everyone picked up and is playing their parts right now,” Rounds said.
“We are still a little bumpy and working on things. Our defense has picked up a lot and we need to work on our unforced errors,” Rounds added.
The team’s record as of Sept. 22 was 2-9.
“We haven’t won very many games, but it is still early in the season. I am still excited on our potential. Practices have been really going well,” Safranski said.
“Once we fix our errors, we will be ready to dominate. After our tournament and a couple of games afterwards, we will have already played most of the teams and be able to put everything together and work around our errors,” Rounds continued.
“We have all the tools for a successful team, but need to work on our communication on the court. I like the group of girls we have on the team, and I am excited to see what we are made of,” Safranski stated, also adding that she feels she has to be a motivator on the court.
Communication and unforced errors were trouble in a recent two match homestead for the Lady Eagles on Sept. 16 and 17 vs. Kishwaukee and Highland.
Following a loss in four games to Kishwaukee, IVCC forced Highland into five games before losing.
Recently the Lady Eagles played in their own volleyball invitational, and will play in three more home games before the end of the season.
Head coach for the IVCC Lady Eagles is Nicci Gibson.
