SGA freshman election sees decline in voter turnout

Student Government freshman elections saw a much lower turnout in votes from 377 cast votes in 2007 to 181 cast votes in last week’s elections.
Kyle Wineinger won the Freshman Representative position with 99 votes while the Freshman Programming Board filled two positions with Kati Tunget at 133 votes and Cheyanne Smith at 110 votes.
Faculty Advisor of the SGA, Cory Tomasson, said he was “very pleased with [2008’s] turnout.” “It is always nice to have a contested race for each position. We have a very active SGA this year, and we are hopeful that these individuals will help to make this year a success,” Tomasson said.
According to a Oct. 4, 2007 IV Leader article, the 2007 election voter turnout was the highest Tomasson had seen in 14 years.
