With construction on the new student parking lot on East Campus starting earlier than expected, the date for the lot, as long as weather cooperates, is set to be completed by June 25, 2009, said Jerry Corcoran, IVCC President.
The estimated $2.1 million project is going well, as far as construction, and has not hit any “snags” during the process, Corcoran said. This was before the construction caused a water main break while construction workers were doing excavation work on the lot on Oct. 8. The water main was severed, leading to afternoon class cancellations because of a lack of restroom facilities and drinking water.
Even though the new student parking lot is slated to hold approximately 650 spaces and 280 spaces in closer proximity to the building, some students are frustrated at the construction process.
IVCC sophomore Alex Jenkins feels inconvenienced because of the construction.
“I am mad that they did not start it during the summer,” said Jenkins, “but it will be interesting to see when it is done. They need to hurry.”
Corcoran noted in a Sept. 4, 2008 IV Leader issue that with the inconveniences come better things in the future and that “good things in life are worth waiting for.”
Construction on the parking lot began on Sept. 22 leaving only 80 spaces on East Campus, which is prioritized for students taking courses in the East Campus building.
Students who have classes on East Campus that have not received a permit to park in the lot should contact their instructors.
