The voter registration drive in the Illinois Valley Community College’s lobby on Oct. 7 completed this election season’s registration drives and was just one of many held by faculty and deputy registrars this fall, bringing the total number of registered voters to 387 since August.
According to Mike Phillips, Geology instructor and coordinator of IVCC’s voter registration drive, staff, students and faculty all spent time registering voters at two key college events: New Student Day and Spirit Day, in addition to tables set up in the main lobby.
Phillips noted that he is thankful “to all of the faculty and staff who gave their time to act as deputy registrars and spent time in their offices and at the registration table signing up voters. Three students, Michelle Glancy, Catie Weber and College Democrats President Brie Urbanec became certified as deputy registrars and provided a lot of help as well.”
Eighty three voters were registered on Oct. 7 and 119 total during the week of Oct. 7. Since 2002, 1,667 voters have been registered Phillips said.
IVCC President Jerry Corcoran said at the Oct. 8 Candidate Forum that he appreciates Phillips’ and others’ efforts in making sure that IVCC students are registered to vote. “[Phillips does] a great job and we're all very proud of [him],” Corcoran said.
Late voter registration is available through the County Clerk’s office until Oct. 21.
Deputy Registrars who helped with the fall 2008 drive include: Angie Dunlap, Jan Vogelgesang, Joanne Jalley, Kim Abel, Lori Cinotte, Mary Tully, Pat Reneer, Sue Mertel, Tracy Morris, Tara Coburn, Tom Schultz, Eric Schroeder, Jason Beyer, Brie Urbanec (student), Michelle Glancy (student) and Phillips.
