IVCC TO HOST COLLEGE NIGHT
    Illinois Valley Community College will host the 36th annual College Night on Monday, Oct. 20 from 6:30-8 p.m. in the IVCC gymnasium. 
    Representatives from 50 colleges, universities and military branches will be present. 
Students will have the opportunity to speak to faculty, staff and program coordinators about the opportunities available to them at IVCC, as well as options for transfer.
    Director of Financial Aid, Steve Crick, will also be giving a brief presentation at 6 p.m. to discuss the fundamentals of financial aid.

STUDENT STORIES SOUGHT
    The Admissions Office has created a new Web page on www.ivcc.edu/bestfit. 
Students are encouraged to submit stories about IVCC and how they have benefited from attending IVCC.

MASSAGE THERAPY WEEK
    National Massage Therapy Awareness Week begins on Monday, Oct. 20, and IVCC massage therapy students will provide free chair massages on Wednesday, Oct. 22 in the college’s main lobby from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. 
    In addition to free chair massages on IVCC’s campus, the students will offer them in Ottawa at Wal-Mart on Sat. Oct. 25 and Sunday Oct. 26 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. 
    IVCC has been offering certificates and degrees in Therapeutic Massage since 1999.
    “IVCC’s massage therapy graduates are employed throughout the Illinois area and well beyond. Join us and meet our current massage students, have some fun and above all relax for 15 minutes,” stated Cherie Monterastelli, IVCC massage therapy program coordinator.
    According to the 12th annual consumer survey conducted by the American Massage Therapy Association, as stress rates increase, more people are turning to massage therapy for relaxation.

STUDENT GROUP RECOGNIZED
    Illinois Valley Community College has been selected by the American Chemical Society Student Affiliates chapter to receive an Outstanding Award for its activities conducted last year.
    “Professor Dr. Matthew Johl, faculty advisor of the chapter,” said Bruce E. Bursten, President of the American Chemical Society, Washington, D.C., “deserves special commendation.’
    “Few faculty members are willing to make the commitment of time and energy that a successful chapter requires. Professor Johl’s efforts certainly represent the best in undergraduate science education and mentoring around the country. We extend our warmest congratulations to the students and Professor Johl for setting such a fine example for other chapters and preparing the next generation of chemical professionals.”
    Over 330 reports were submitted to the Society Committee on Education and 40 were presented with outstanding, 71 commendable and 96 honorable mentions. 
    The list of the award winning chapters will be published in “Chemical and Engineering News” and “In Chemistry,” the student affiliate magazine. 
    The award winning chapters will also be honored on Sunday, March 22 in Salt Lake City, Utah at the ACS National Meeting.

BAKE SALE
    The IVCC Chem Club will be having a bake sale on Wednesday, Oct. 29 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the cafeteria.

GAY-STRAIGHT ALLIANCE MEETS
    There will be an evening meeting for the Gay-Straight Alliance on Oct. 20 from 5:30 to 6:30 in Room C-105A. 
    A daytime meeting will be held Nov. 5 from noon to 1 p.m. also in Room C-105A.

EL DIA DE LOS MUERTOS
    The World Language Organization will be having a Day of the Dead Commemoration on Wednesday, Oct. 29 from 12:30 to 3:15 p.m. in the Fireplace Lounge. 
Students are invited.

COLLEGE VISITS
    The following colleges will be making visits to IVCC: DePaul on Wednesday, Oct. 29 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Eureka College on Monday, Nov. 3 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and Northern Illinois University on Thursday, Nov. 6 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
    Students are encouraged to meet with the admissions representatives if they are considering attending these institutions.
