IVCC is a place for the student

TRUSTEE's CORNER
Column by Liz Kunkel, Sept. 13, 2007

“IVCC teaches those who seek and is enriched by those who learn.”
Illinois Valley Community College’s primary reason for existence is simple: the students.
So to say that IV teaches those who seek, it is to say that those who are searching for a path in life, those who are pursuing their dream to go to college, those who are following a plan to transfer to a four-year university, etc. No matter what the reason, IV exists for every single student, and IV will teach every single student who truly wants to learn.
The second half of our mission statement, then, “…and is enriched by those who learn,” is essential for the success of our institution, because every single individual brings something new to the school.
Everyone benefits from everyone else. With that in mind, I would like to introduce myself.
My name is Elizabeth Kunkel, and I am the 2007-2008 Student Trustee. What exactly is the Student Trustee? Within the collective whole of the Board of Trustees, in general, my main task is to act as the liaison between the student body and the Board. In doing so, I am actively involved with the Student Government Association. This means that if you have questions, concerns, or suggestions, you should not be afraid to contact me or one of the other SGA members.
I am very open to hearing your thoughts, and I will do my best to help answer each question, concern, or suggestion brought to me. As I previously stated, every single person brings something new to the school.
Each individual has ideas on how to make IV the best that it can be. Think about what can be accomplished if everyone’s ideas were shared.
You can contact me through e-mail (kun6546@bart.ivcc.edu) or come to the SGA office during my office hours, which are posted on the SGA office door (C-108). The SGA office phone number is 815-224-0247. I will do my best to relay information to you about what is happening on campus concerning you directly as a student through this column.
Just a couple of comments and announcements: I cannot stress enough to get involved. IV is diverse in that it has many student activities. Search and find, because I guarantee there is something for everyone. Look in your student handbook for events coming up. One in particular that I would like to announce is the freshman elections on Sept. 13 and 14 in the Lobby. It takes two seconds to fill out a ballot, and you are benefiting IV greatly in doing so.
In conclusion, whether you are a new student or a returning student, seek to learn, IVCC will benefit and in return, give you a remarkable experience. Best of luck for the semester!
