Illinois Valley Community College’s wireless fidelity, or
Wi-Fi, network is up and running this year.
Wi-Fi is a type of internet connection that allows users to access the Internet without any wired connection. The wireless capability should allow students to more effectively use their laptops on campus.
According to Emily Vescogni, IVCC’s Director of Learning Technologies, areas with
Wi-Fi include the library, the Computer Resource Center (CRC), the reading center, D-325 the college’s lecture hall and the cafeteria.
The signal does not extend very far out of these areas, but there are plans to provide school-wide
Wi-Fi access in the future, says Vescogni.
In regard to the network’s security, Vescogni calls it a safe solution saying, “Students’ computers are checked for necessary patches and protection before accessing the connection, so there is little security risk.”
Students do not have direct access to their U drive if they are using the
Wi-Fi connection, she said.
If there is any confusion about IVCC’s Wi-Fi network, students are encouraged to seek aid in the CRC, according to Vescogni.
The fall open hours of the CRC are 8 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 8a.m.–4:30 p.m. on Fridays and 8a.m.- noon on Saturdays. The CRC is closed on Sundays.
