I am the Dean of Humanities, Fine Arts, and Social Sciences. Are you new to this position? If not, where did you hold this position before IVCC?I was the Dean of Academic Affairs at Morton College before this. But, this particular dean position is more of an instructional dean. What are your impressions, not only of the students, but also the atmosphere at IVCC, and your fellow faculty and staff? I am pleasantly surprised by how welcoming everyone is. Also, a lot of students here plan to transfer to a four-year college, and this percentage is higher than many community colleges. So far, what is your favorite aspect of IVCC? The collegiality. The faculty gets along well and there are courses where people are co-teaching. I like the collaboration and am very pleased with how well the faculty goes about teaching. What is your favorite thing about the Illinois Valley Area? Well, I’ve lived most of my life in the desert, (in Tucson, Arizona), so I’m glad to see plenty of green. I know it’s a minor thing, but this place just feels charged with energy and life. What should a student know about you? I’m here to facilitate their learning. They should feel free to stop by and let me know how we can improve their learning as well as the teaching, because I believe the process of teaching is as important as learning. I also feel students should be encouraged by their teachers to participate in class. We love teaching and interacting with students. Interview submitted by Anna Niebuhr
