Learning year continues for new tennis players

It is a tough season for the women’s tennis team at IVCC. Competing against mostly Chicago teams — who play year round — is difficult for a team of mostly freshmen.
“It is a young squad, but IVCC is about getting experience,” said Coach Bonnie Peterson. “This year is mostly a training year; they will improve and be better for next year.”
But the team is not at a complete disadvantage with many inexperienced players; they have had many tiebreakers and close matches in the last few meets.
“They give it their all and they are showing improvement at every match,” Peterson said. “I’m happy about their competitiveness and their will to play the best they can.”
With eight players on the team, only two being sophomores, the team lacks college-level experience, but all of the girls have great potential to be successful, according to Peterson. Returning sophomores Cynthia Blomquist and Maureen McGill pose as great role models for the freshmen, she said.
The freshmen, consisting of Samantha Carlson, Jill Crull, Rachel Hoffman, Kaitlin Liesse, Megan Pyszka, and Kayla Samolinski are improving and will be a force to be reckoned with next year, according to the coach.
The Women’s Tennis Regional will be played on Oct. 5 and 6 in Moraine Valley;.
The Eagles hope to send the doubles team of Megan Pyszka and Kaitlin Liesse and the No. 1 singles player Maureen McGill to the semi-finals.
