Repaving, more spaces in store for parking lot

No one can honestly say they like parking in the “gravel” parking lot (long ago it was paved). It’s quite a bit closer to the main campus, sure, but with conditions the way they are, it’s almost not even worth parking there. No one would argue that it needs to be resurfaced, right?
Well, I have some good news: The General Assembly’s budget earmarked $500,000 to IVCC for parking lot improvements and although the governor vetoed this member initiative, it looks like the GA may very well override the veto and we should be able to move forward with our plan to fix the East Campus lot once and for all and possibly add another new lot east of the Cultural Centre.
The new lot will definitely add more spaces…the less time you have to spend searching for a space, the better. Even before the proposed new lot and resurfacing of current lot projects come to completion, I’m happy to report that the SGA’s recommendation for designating parking space for motorcycles has been approved, and the new area should be set up in Lot 1 very soon.
One of the other big projects on campus, besides the parking projects, is being coordinated by the Beautification Team and the school architect. A plan has been developed to make the Cultural Centre appear even better than what it is now. To help neutralize the current colors, we will be adding some paint here and there and touching up areas to make the centre look richer and more elegant. A ticket booth is also in the mix.
Also, the Beautification Team and the college’s architect are setting up a plan for color coding the buildings on campus better. The group has a lot of neat ideas and we are excited to start working on this project. As this project takes off, along with the others, I will give you specific details as to what is going on.
I will continue to do my best to keep you updated on what’s going on around campus, and again, if you ever have any suggestions, questions, or concerns, please feel free to contact me at kun6546@bart.ivcc.edu, 815-481-2349 or Office Hours (posted on the SGA office door).
Just a couple more announcements: Oct. 4 is the Blood Drive. It’s not too late to get involved. Look for a sign on campus with a number to call. Also, Jason Wallace, a member of the Green Party, is running for Congress of the 11th District. He is a 25-year-old student who has a lot of awesome ideas for helping state funding for education. If you wish to hear him speak, he is coming Oct. 19. More details will follow. Last thing, Student Government is involved with Special Olympics. Other volunteers are welcome.
