Fall brings cooler weather and other random joys

Column: I Was Thinking

Everybody says the reason why they love autumn is because of the beautiful colors, the falling leaves and the changing season.

Well, fall is my favorite season, but not because of the colors. I do not think that fall is all that beautiful of a time in our area. Maybe in other parts of the country the fall foliage is a thing of beauty.
No, for me, I love fall for all the superficial, selfish reasons. Mostly, I love my sweatshirts. Nothing is better than feeling comfortable in my oversized sweatshirts. When it’s cool enough for a sweatshirt, but not yet cold enough for a winter coat, that’s when the temperature is just right for me. I love when it’s just a little bit too cold so that you have to use three or four blankets and your fleece pj pants just to stay warm in bed.
I also like not sweating. Yes, I said it. Summer is fun and all, and I always enjoy the beach and relaxing in a pool. But, really, sweating is gross and I hate it.
Besides the whole temperature aspect of fall, I like having new programs to watch on television. Re-runs are great, but new is always better.
love fall baseball. The last few weeks of regular season MLB are better than the cliffhangers in the best novels and television shows. All the speculation of close division and wild card races and the—if this team wins and this team loses then the magic number is—is so captivating. The fall of 2003 was my favorite fall yet. You could feel the excitement of Wrigleyville emanate its way down here in the Illinois Valley. Let’s hope this fall, all that excitement and more finds its way to the hearts of Chicago Cubs fans.
Oh, but the pain of fall is that it just goes by too fast. It seems like one day its 90 degrees and the next there is a snowfall. The only thing I hate more than sweating is the bitter cold that burns your face and makes you wake up earlier to warm up your car — how I hate warming up my car.
So here hope to a fall that is long lasting and brings great new TV shows, plenty of sweatshirts and a World Series Championship to Wrigley Field.
