Going on a road trip: Consider these tricks of the trade

Column by Deidra Lutz

One summer I went on a road trip to Michigan with a couple of friends, and I had lots of fun.
I forgot to bring a couple of things, such as extra cash and a pillow. So on the way up to Michigan it was very uncomfortable without having a pillow.
It’s always fun to bring Jolly Ranchers, Starbucks Coffee or your favorite food. Just bring something to munch on in the car so you won’t have to stop a lot along the road.
Remember what your parent’s said, “Don’t forget your toothbrush!”
It’s always kind of boring taking road trips with your family, or if you have some boring friends. However, it’s always fun to play some classic road trips games! Have fun and try some of these:
TWO TRUTHS AND ONE LIE: The player tells the group three statements about himself or herself. Two are true and one is a lie. Everyone tries to guess which one is the lie.
THE CAR NEXT DOOR: Invent stories about people in the car next to yours.
ALPHABET WORDS: Pick a letter and find words or objects starting with that letter. Move through the alphabet. Or play as a memory game - A is for apple; B is for ___. The second player must remember what “A” was for. And so on through the alphabet.

A&E Editor’s Note: The following is an interview that staff writer Deidra Lutz contributed for her ‘Road Trip Stories’ column.

Karl Persky is planning a trip trying to catch a ride on back of a train, and hopefully no one shanks him.

Road trip rules that he goes by:
1. If you’re going to a concert, bring some tunes that will pump you up, instead of mellow music.
2. The passenger is always the navigator.
3. The passenger controls the music, but his selection can be vetoed by the driver.
4. On extended road trips, the passenger needs to stay awake or help drive.
5. Testosterone builds over time and can cause friends to beat each other’s throats; so only take the friends who you can stand to be with for the respective extended period of time.
6. Bring money; lots of money, but be very cautious with it and have a designated hiding place. Also, know your expenses ahead of time.
