IVCC’s chapter of Phi Theta Kappa will be hosting a series of Honors Satellite Seminars this fall called “Gold, Gods and Glory.” These seminars will examine major world powers. Three more seminars are to take place during the semester.
“This is a perfect opportunity for students and community members to discuss their views on current world issues,” said Michelle Franklin, Vice President of Fellowship.
“Dealing With the Dragon: America’s Economic Relationship with China” will take place Oct. 30 in Room D-225 at 7 p.m. It will examine the potential roles of America and China in 21st century economy. Zanny Minton Beddoes, an editor for The Economist, is expected to cover topics such as the pace of the economy, the global trade regime, efforts on global warming and questions over the safety of China-made products.
“Afghanistan After the Taliban” will be Nov. 15 in the Cultural Centre at 7 p.m. The discussion will be lead by Afghan-American writer Tamim Ansary. Ansary will discuss a brief history of the Taliban’s power, its interactions with American military, political reconstruction efforts and current sources of power in the Afghan area.
“American Theocracy: Politics, Radical Religion, Oil, and Borrowed Money in the 21st Century” will be held Nov. 27 in Room D-225 at 7 p.m. This seminar will discuss how major world powers, such as the Roman Empire, have inevitably fallen following political and economic problems. New York Times best-selling writer Kevin Phillips will explain how America may be subject to this type of downfall.
All seminars are expected to last one hour with a faculty-lead group discussion afterward. For more information, contact PTK advisor Julie Sherbyn through e-mail at Julie_sherbyn@ivcc.edu.
