IVCC kicks off involvement with United Way

A committee consisting of students and staff has been formed to kick off Illinois Valley Community College’s involvement in the United Way. On Sept. 21, representatives from the surrounding United Way agencies kicked off their annual campaigns at IVCC and discussed what the United Way does for the community and how people can get involved.

In addition, agencies that benefit from the money raised from the United Way were represented. Dixie Reed, executive director for the Illinois Valley chapter, said “the primary goal is community assessment.” The theme for this year’s drive is “Real Lives … Real Impact.”

The Illinois Valley chapter has set a $500,000 goal to help meet the needs of agencies in its area that provide services to residents. Jerry Corcoran, vice president of business and finance, pulled together the team that will work to gather donations at the college. “From my perspective, the cause is worthy and the need is great,” Corcoran said. “Every contribution makes a difference.”

Corcoran has worked this year to boost student involvement in the United Way campaign. Jenna Moore, Student Government Association president, and Megan Guilfoyle, student trustee, have been named to the IVCC committee. “Donating is a great way for students to feel like they are actually benefiting the community, and through this United Way campaign, I know that we will achieve this,” Guilfoyle said. Opportunities will be available in the upcoming weeks for students to contribute to the United Way campaign, she said.
