The Illinois Valley Community College women’s tennis team
finished off their season on Oct. 7th placing fourth in overall team play and
fielded a single and doubles match in the finals.
Coach Bonnie Petersen was very proud of her small team who
“played with a lot heart” for her throughout the season. The team featured
returning sophomore Angela Richard and welcomed four freshmen in the beginning
of the season. Petersen said that she felt “great going to regional this year
and was hoping to have several of her ladies in the finals.” She went on to say,
“Unfortunately in some seeding we got in the same brackets as the #1 seeds early
on, which makes it a strong battle to begin with.
In tennis the final scores do not always show how close a
game can be, In a lot of the 1st round plays coaches were counting at least
10-12 deuces before the game finished.”
In #1 singles play, Angela Richard lost in her 2nd round
against Oakton player Wojciechowska 4-6, 6-1.
In #2 singles play, freshman Jamie Griggs lost in her 1st
round angains Elgin player Aleksiejczyk 3-6, 0-6.
In #3 singles play, freshman Donna Kawaguchi placed runner-up
in the finals where she was defeated by Waubonsee player Papke 2-6, 0-6.
In #4 singles play, freshman Maureen McGill lost in her 1st
round against Waubonsee player Marion 3-6, 2-6.
In #5 singles play, freshman Cyndy Blomquist lost in her 1st
round against Elgin player Coffin 2-6, 1-6.
In #1 doubles play, Richards and Griggs lost in the 2nd round
to the Waubonsee team of Marcoux and Papke 0-6, 0-6.
In #2 doubles play, Kawaguchi and McGill finished as runners
up in a very closely played final but were defeated by the Elgin team of Hindley
and Altieri 3-6, 6-4, 8-10.
Overall, the regional was won by the Waubonsee team and
second place was taken by Elgin. The team finished the season with a 3-5 record
but Petersen noted that they played against alot of teams that are fielded and
practice throughout the year.
Petersen said, “The women showed a lot of confidence and
played their best within their season. They are a good team that showed a lot of
heart both for their game and their coach. I am looking forward to seeing how my
four freshman turn out as sophomores.”
If anyone is interested in joining the women’s tennis team,
