Illinois Valley Community College’s new intramural director
is a familiar face to the Athletic Department and some students as last year’s
men’s basketball assistant Tommy Canale has filled the vacant position.
“I upped the number of classes I was taking online and didn’t
feel as if I had the time to continue coaching and do the work to graduate in
the spring,” Canale said of why he resigned as basketball coach.
Some intramural activities have already happened and more are
expected to take place as the school year progresses.
“We have already had a Euchre tournament and (Nov. 8 was) the
start of the flag football season,” Canale said.
Aureliano Barrios and Luke Holmbeck narrowly won the euchre
tournament with 50 points, while the runner-up team of Troy Yeager and Mike
Fleming scored 48. Coming in a close third place was the team of Brandon
Franklin and Chris DeArcos with 45.
For flag football, only two teams, the ’85 Bears and the
Eagle Warriors, signed up to play. A best of five series will determine a
champion.
“I am looking forward to the next Intramural event scheduled
in December, a four-man basketball tournament,” Canale said. The tournament
starts on Dec. 6 and will run for three days.
“Teams can be signed up from now until the fifth.”
Next semester Intramural tournaments include a five-on-five
basketball, volleyball and dodgeball tournaments as well as Texas Hold ’Em poker
and 16-inch softball tournament.
“In sixteen inch softball, you don’t need a glove,” Canale
said. “Hopefully we can get some nine man teams in the field.”
