New history class offered: The Vietnam War Era

History buffs rejoice! A new special topics history class is
being offered in the IVCC curriculum.
Steve Charry, history professor, will be teaching a class
about the Vietnam War Era for the spring 2006 semester.
Charry stresses, however, that the class will not only deal
with the Vietnam War, but events from whole time period.
“The class is not just about the Vietnam War,” said Charry,
“because you need to put it into a time period context to understand the bigger
picture.”
He also mentioned that it will not “just be a military class”
but also focus on political, cultural, social, and other relevant points of the
era and history and be based from around 1945 to the late 70’s to early 80’s.
Charry explained that since the special topics history
classes are usually only offered in the spring semesters, and next spring will
probably be a class focusing on the Civil War, this may be the only time for
students to enroll in this class until 2008.
According to Charry, the Vietnam War, and issues related to
it,” is still very much present in our culture today.” He wants this idea to be
a key focal point of the class, along with several guest speakers throughout the
semester.
He emphasized that the Vietnam class is “not just for history
majors,” but for anyone interested in history, and anyone who would enjoy taking
the class to increase their knowledge on the subject.
