“Dean Riley Night,” a night dedicated to the former IVCC basketball coach who was the coach of one of IVCC’s most successful teams in school history, has been postponed due to the coach’s health concerns, according to Director of Development, Fran Brolley.
The night was original scheduled for February 19, but will be rescheduled for next season.
Riley was the coach at IVCC from 1979 to1990 and compiled a 234-118 record. His 1988-89 squad finished the season at 30-2 and was the No. 1-ranked Division II team in the country for most of the season.
His 1987-88 team experienced the most success as the team finished third in the NJCCA National Tournament in Lansing, Mich.
Riley also coached at Ottawa High School before coming to IVCC.
“I think coach Dean Riley was a tremendous individual who did a fantastic job at Ottawa High School and at Illinois Valley,” current IVCC men’s basketball coach Mike Riley said, who is no relation to Dean. “There were a lot of people who enjoyed being around him and learned a great deal. He is a tremendous teacher and a coach. ...We wish him the best that he can recover and get back on the road to recovery and enjoy his retirement.”
