The women’s basketball team scored a win over Spoon River in a tumultuous second half that featured fast breaks and some needed scoring off the bench. The Eagles came away with a 89-67 win over a 3-9 opponent.
Head coach Steve Crick said that although the team struggled in the first half, the team was able to make some productive changes at half time in their half-court trap that turned the game in the Eagles favor.
Coach Crick said, “We used the half-court trap the last time we played Spoon River and we came away with a 25 point win, so they were well prepared for it and we struggled to get points in the first half. At half-time, we made some adjustments to the half-court trap and it really worked for us.”
He went on to say, “Spoon River played really tough for about 30-35 minutes but we were able to wear them out for the last 8 minutes of the game.”
Crick said, “We are really starting to see this team gel together.” The team has nine new players this year.
The Eagles were 38 out of 75 shooting, 5 for 5 at the line, had 19 assists, 32 rebounds, and 22 steals in the game.
Leading the team, Margaret Carter had 27 points, 4 assists, 4 rebounds, and 12 steals, which Coach Crick said might be a school record.
Tiffany Carter had 16 points, 5 assists, and 3 rebounds, with 7 out of 9 shooting in the second half.
Off the bench, Krystal Rosengren and Tiffany Carter combined to score 18 points.
The women’s basketball team is ranked second in the Division II poll, behind Carl Sandberg College.
The Eagles last home game in December is on the 18th.
