IVCC athlete Jonelle Yaklich has signed a letter of intent to play basketball for Newberry College in South Carolina in the fall.
Yaklich is an L-P graduate where she played basketball all four years. As a Lady Eagle, she has proven that she has the skill to make it at a Division II school. This season alone, Yaklich scored an average of 23 points per game which made her the fifth highest scorer in junior college Division I basketball. She also made 89 percent of her free-throws, making her the second best free throw shooter in the nation.
In addition to those impressive statistics, Yaklich was also an Academic All-American and a member of the All-America honorable mention team. She was named to the first team all-conference and all-region.
Yaklich said she chose Newberry because she liked the coaching staff, and the school’s environment. She is excited to continue playing basketball and for the opportunities it may open up for her. She summed it up saying,
“I look forward to moving away form home and playing at the next level of competition.”
Coach Steve Crick said he is proud of Yaklich and her accomplishments.
"Jonelle had a great career at IVCC both athletically and academically,” he said. “She is the type of player that every coach wants. She led the team in scoring 2 years in a row, was chosen all-conference, all-region and
all-American two years in a row and did a great job in the classroom, achieving an outstanding grade point average. I'm sure that she will do a great job at Newberry College and help their basketball program achieve a winning record."
