This school year has seen an increase in the use of the Peer Tutoring Center. This free service is available to any student who wants academic help in any class.
Tutoring may take place in small group sessions or individual sessions, according to coordinator Teri Rossman. Some of the classes that students get tutored in are computer science, anatomy, accounting, Spanish, history, and math.
Most students who received help from the tutoring center earned a higher grade in the course than they had before tutoring, Rossman said.
The increase in students’ use of peer tutoring has led to an expansion of a Writing Center. The Writing Center is available for students who need help writing papers and essays in any course.
Rossman said many of the students who come are from English courses, but tutors have also been helping students with nursing papers, history papers, and art papers.
This service is also free and students can make an appointment to sit one-on-one with the tutor to check the paper for suggestions about grammar, mechanics, and organization.
Both the Writing Center and the Peer Tutoring Center are located in B-201.
Students have commented on the center by saying, ”With tutoring, I understood the material better, and my grades improved.” Another student said, “My tutor gave me the extra push and encouragement that I needed.”
If you have any questions contact Rossman in B-325 or call 815-224-0479 or email her at teri_rossman@ivcc.edu. Students can also stop by the center in B-201.
