Imagine you are walking out to your car alone after work and you see two people walking towards you. Your gut feeling is that something is not right, but you proceed to your car trying not to notice them. The next thing you know you are tackled from behind and dragged off.
This a scary thought, one most people do not believe will ever happed to them, but the reality of it is that one in three females will be sexually assaulted by age 18 and one in six males will be sexually assaulted by age 18, according to an Illinois State Police self-protection pamphlet.
So what can have been done to stop someone from attacking you?
The IVCC Wellness Committee hosted one of its “Wellness Lunchbox Series” on self-defense on April 14 in the Fireplace Lounge.
The seminar was presented By Ross and Debbie Radke, owners and instructors of the Ottawa Martial Arts Academy, Inc.
Ross Radke is a master instructor hybrid martial arts, master instructor Tae Kwon Do, first Dan HapKiDo and certified rape awareness and escape instructor with ranks held in Kenpo and Judo.
Deborah Radke is head instructor, Third Dan Tae Kwon Do, third Gup HapKiDo, certified rape awareness and escape instructor and demonstration Team Coach.
The Radkes talked to the group of students and faculty on self defense showcasing some basic self defense moves but mostly talked about what people can do to help prevent from being attacked.
For more information on self defense, the Radkes are available at the Ottawa Martial Arts Academy, by calling (815) 434-7576 or on the Web at www.ottawamartialarts.com
