Human Services program recognizes V-Day with display

Letter to the Editor, Feb. 26, 2004

Thanks to all the people who stopped by our V-Day exhibit on Feb. 24. It was a very important day for women and girls in the world.
V-Day stands for victory over violence against women in the world. Here are some facts that will show the importance of V-Day: Between one in four and one in five college women experience a complete or attempted rape during their college years; every 90 seconds somewhere in America someone is sexually assaulted; and females age 12 to 24 are at the greatest risk of experiencing rape or sexual assault.
These are just a few examples of the world we live in. These are exciting times with a very scary reality. That is why the new “Human Service” program IVCC offers is so important to our generation and the ones to follow.
The “Human Service” program helps one develop and establish skills to help people in need, including victims of violent crime. The Associate Degree in “Human Services” will open the doors for employment in social service agencies.
V-Day was organized by students the class “Helping Across Cultures,” which is one of several required classes for ADHS. V-Day opens students’ eyes and teaches them to look beyond color, class and race.
Jean Batson-Turner, Room B324, is the program coordinator. Please contact her with any questions.
This captivating exhibit never would have materialized had it not been for Teresa Benham. We want to thank her and ADV/SAS for all their services to victims of violence, including an office in the IVCC Counseling Center. Anyone (males included) is welcome.
Thank you so very much to all the volunteers and sponsors who helped us make V-Day such a success.
