Voter registration drive nets 170

By Courtnie Shanyfelt

Nearly 170 students were registered to vote by deputy registrars on campus during the month of February.
The registration made students eligible to vote in the March 16 primary, according to geology instructor Mike Phillips, who organized the campus registration drive.
While Phillips said the 170 voters who were registered is lower than the 345 students who were registered in fall 2002, the voting drive this spring only lasted a week and a half compared to the month long fall 2002 drive.
In addition, Phillips said that representatives from the La Salle County Clerk's Office will be on campus March 2 to demonstrate a new optical voting machine that will be used for the March 16 primary.
For more information on the elections, students can go to www.ivcc.edu/phillips and click on the link that says election information.
In addition, questions about voting can be directed to Phillips via e-mail at mike_phillips@ivcc.edu.
Phillips said while voter registration is suspended for the current time, students who are not registered would be able to register with campus registrars again two days after the primary election. Tables also will be set up again in the fall.
