Dean position created

A new administrative position, Dean of Student Development, is being set up at the college and should be in place around mid-April.
The new dean will oversee counseling, career services and Project Success, a federally funded program that gives aid to students who are either disabled or are first generation college students.
Right now, counselors report directly to Bob Marshall, vice president of student services, but the new dean will take over this responsibility.
“This way, they [counselors] will have their own administrator,” Marshall said. He believes this will help students by giving them access to more direct help.
The idea to bring in a new dean came when Marshall was given added responsibility.
“The President asked me to start overseeing two additional departments,” Marshall said, “so we needed to reshuffle things and bring in a dean to help.”
Marshall now oversees the Development Office, which includes the IVCC Foundation, and the Department of Community Relations and Marketing, formerly the public information office.
Fran Brolley, former public information director, has been named interim director of development. Valery Calvetti, counselor and education to careers coordinator, has been named interim director of community relations and marketing.
Marshall said 17 people applied for the position, but that number has now dwindled down to two finalists.
The new dean will be named at the March 17 board meeting, but it will take about a month to get everything in place for the dean’s arrival, Marshall said.
