AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY: SNA helps organize Relay for Life on campus
Raising money for cancer research and raising cancer awareness are the goals of a number of people at IVCC who are participating in the Relay for Life June 21 and 22.
The American Cancer Society sponsored event officially begins with a ceremony at 6 p.m. in the circle drive and parking lot one and closes 12 hours later. The opening ceremony includes a Cancer Survivor's Victory Lap.
Following that lap, teams of 10 to 12 people take turns walking over an established path, until 6 a.m.
At dusk, a candlelight Luminaria Ceremony is held to honor cancer survivors and to remember those who lost the battle against cancer. This ceremony is open to the public.
At press time, teams had been organized by the Student Nurse Association, the library, and business and industry services.
Pam Mammano, nursing instructor and SNA advisor, said this was her fourth year with the relay.
"It is a worthwhile, emotional, yet fun-filled 12 hours," she said.
In addition to sponsoring a team, the SNA will provide educational information, and games for adults and children. Student Oliva Whitney is organizing the Safari Center, which will run from 6 to 10:30 p.m.
SNA members are also working on Tell A Friend relay teams, sponsoring a calling drive to educate women over 40 about the importance of mammograms. The Tell A Friend teams will also have a lap around the track. Student Liz Carlson is organizing this section of the SNA's participation.
The SNA has organized a number of fund raising events for the relay. Cindy Cadegiani is the SNA relay team captain.
Further information about the relay is available from Mammano at ext. 322, Gloria Bouxsein at ext. 481 or Laura Hodgson at ext. 525.
