Someone claiming to be a security guard at IVCC had a vehicle owned by a college staff member towed from campus.

The incident, which is under investigation by the Oglesby Police, occurred on the evening of Jan. 17.

Ken Sangston, director of safety services, said the towing company didn't verify the call and removed the vehicle without IVCCs approval. He was reacting to rumors that a vehicle belonging to a member of his staff was towed for allegedly being illegally parked in a spot reserved for First Responders.

Owners of disabled vehicles, banks repossessing vehicles and spouses in divorce situations have had vehicles towed from IVCC lots, Sangston said.

"That's why it's important for people to notify us if a vehicle is going to be towed," he said. "If there's somebody in the lot getting towed, we check. (We) check because if the vehicle is missing, the owner will file a missing vehicle report with the Oglesby Police Department."

Sangston said the security staff also verifies the identity of the owner, and he urged students and staff to carry their ID cards.

"The Safety Service Department has towed zero vehicles this spring semester," Sangston said.

He did ask students to be careful when parking in the east campus lot, especially when it snows, since that is usually when there are problems with cars triple parking and blocking cars in.

Sangston also asked student to only park in designed parking so they do not block plowing paths.

"Cars in fire lanes or in the way of plowing will be towed," he said.
