The Making Industry Meaningful in College project is a hit, at least with one prospective customer.
MIMIC organizers received an e-mail inquiry from a woman in Philadelphia who had ended up at last year's MIMIC Fair web site. She had been surfing the net in search of a star-themed lamp and got a hit on the Star Gazerz Star Lamp produced and sold by a team of IVCC students in spring 2001.
The organizers had to disappoint her, however, since only 30 units of the lamp were produced, and they were sold at the fair.
Noticing that the lamp was a college project, the web surfer anticipated it might not be for sale, but she added: "If it's not available, just wanted to say that I liked it, and to congratulate you on what looks like a great college program."
The MIMIC project teams students in engineering, electronics, accounting, business, information systems and web design into companies to plan, design, produce, market and sell products. The products are sold on campus at a fair organized for that purpose.
MIMIC teams are currently meeting, designing products to be sold May 1.
Instructors who supervise the project are Alice Steljes, business; Jim Gibson, electronics; Dorene Perez, engineering design; and Marge Hunt, web design. MIMIC is a Tech Prep-sponsored program.
