Global store sale will help build a library
Hand crafted items from Guatemala will be for sale in the library from March 4 through 8 in celebration of Women's History Month and to raise funds for a library in Guatemala.
Sociology instructor Pat Cole, one of the organizers of this project, said the library in Panajachel, Guatemala was destroyed by fire a year ago. Cole, who is conducting her doctoral research in the Latin American country, got to know the director of the library.
"The sadness this (fire) brought to the village are part of my research," Cole said.
Among the items for sale are hand woven fabrics made by women from the village of Santa Catarina: purses, wallets, lunch bags and hackey saks. Organic coffee, hand blown glass items from Xela Gua, and male crafts of wooden masks and wooden trays will also be available.
The global store will be open Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and on Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
A video that Cole created explaining the rebuilding of the library and showing scenes of life and work in Guatemala will be shown at various times throughout the week. The video can also be checked out of the library.
Working with Cole to sponsor the global store are Alma Latina students, Jan Vogelgesang, and the library staff. Students in Amnesty International, People of the World End Racism and Psi Beta are also helping with the store.
