MIMIC springs into sales on May 1
April showers may bring May flowers, but this year theyll also bring a new crop of products to be sold by MIMIC students.
Five student companies have designed five products, which will be on sale at the MIMIC Fair on May 1 in the cafeteria. The products will be on display in Jacobs Library before the fair begins.
The Light-A-Bout company will offer Illumos, a lamp featuring string art, a futuristic design and decorated light bulbs for $10.
The Lampers have designed a lamp and CD holder combination to sell for $10.
Coibee companys Copper Falls desktop fountain and light will be offered for $15.
The Safe-T-Security Company will offer The Watcher, a motion detector/alarm system housed in a birdhouse for $15.
Waterworks, Inc. will be selling Cascading Falls, an indoor waterfall of terracotta pottery for $15.
The theme for the MIMIC Fair is "Spring Into MIMIC." Mary Anderson, a student in the marketing and advertising departments, said the theme "not only pays homage to the changing of the seasons and promise of new things to come, but also gives a nod to spring nd gears without which most machines and industries would be lifeless."
MIMIC, which stands for Making Industry Meaningful in College, places students from electronics engineering design and a variety of businesses classes in companies to select, design, manufacture and market a product.
Anderson said the goal of the program is to expose students to real life experiences that will better prepare them for the world of work.
MIMIC is an award-winning program that was recently featured at a national educational technology conference.
Classes involved in MIMIC are Integrated Business systems (BUS 2260), taught by Alice Steljes; Engineering Design Projects (CAD 2208), taught by Dorene Perez; and Digital Microprocessor: Principles and Applications (ELT 2204), taught by Jim Gibson.
Anderson explained that the mix of classes creates an environment of a manufacturing company. Engineers design the project with help from the electricians. Together they create a prototype to test and develop into a final project ready for production.
Business students prepare budgets and do cost accounting. Marketing students conduct a market survey and advertise of the MIMIC Fair.
"Stop down in the cafeteria on May 1 from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., bring your checkbook, and support your fellow students and staff," Anderson said, adding that the fair is just in time for Mothers Day or graduation gifts.
