Mexican festival brings diversity to college
The Illinois Valley Hispanic Partnership Council is presenting a Cinco De Mayo Festival from 5 to 9 p.m. May 5 in the Cultural Centre.
The event features performances by Balet Folklorico Holy Cross and Banda Herradero Show de Durango, both from Chicago.
The Balet Folklorico will perform traditional Mexican dances and the Banda Herradero will perform traditional Mexican songs.
Margaret Allen, a volunteer member of the Council, said the organizers hope to "help the community understand the vibrant color, music, lively dancing, all the positive parts of the culture."
The celebration also includes Mexican artisans, information booths and food vendors. Allan said food will be available this year because of the demand at last year's event.
The information booths include social service agencies that provide services for Hispanics, and IVCCs Adult Education Department.
"Our ultimate or long-term goal is to set up a scholarship fund to assist Hispanic young people in staying in school," Allen said.
Tickets, available from Allen in the Counseling Center, are $2 if purchased in advance or $3 at the door. Children 13 and under will be admitted free.
The festival is being co-sponsored by IVCCs Diversity Committee, Student Government Association, People of the World End Racism, Adult Education, and corporate sponsors.
