Letter to the Editor: Cancelling school for bad weather
Dear Editor
I am very disturbed that this institution shows little or no concern for the safety of its students or faculty.
On Monday Dec. 11, 2000, we were in the middle of a winter storm by the time we even got out of bed in the morning. The state police had asked people not to be on the roads unless they absolutely had to be. All schools in the area had called off school, even Sauk Valley Community College and Northern Illinois University.
I attempted the drive that morning, but I had the good sense to change my mind. I would have arrived here only to learn that my instructor did not. I tried to phone the college as did my instructor, only to get a recording. And by 10 a.m., the college was closed.
Sure it is our decision whether or not to risk our safety to get here. But in conditions like those, why should we have to choose? The college should have been responsible enough to its students and faculty to have cancelled classes before anyone tried to leave home to get here.
I think most students and faculty would agree with me. Are we really asking that much?
