STUDENT GOVERNMENT: SGA's Soberfest set for April 18

Planning Soberfest, working with newly elected officers, preparing for Lobby Day and discussing student fees are major items on the Student Government Association agenda.
On April 18, members of the State Police will be teaming up with SGA members to promote sobriety. A number of activities are being planned for the Soberfest which has been offered on campus in previous years.
Members of the 2000-2001 SGA are also working with newly elected SGA officers, helping them with running meetings and keeping up with programming. Elections for 2001-2002 officers were held April 5 and 6.
Lobby Day, an opportunity for students to meet with state legislators, is on April 24. Student trustee Jacob Frost said students from all over the state will be in Springfield supporting a variety of causes.
"IVCC has been appropriated $6 million by the government to abate the asbestos and the House may not give us that much," Frost said. "That's a good reason to go."
He added that any student can participate.
On the student fee issue, SGA members are considering a proposal by Eastern Illinois University for a standardized statewide student fee. SGA advisor Cory Tomasson said IVCC's fees are clear-cut and itemizing them, in line of the EIU proposal, would be difficult.
