Physics instructor William Seremak will officially retire on May 31. He has been at IVCC since 1970.
"I really enjoy teaching young people physics," he said. "Over the years we have taken annual trips to the U of I to see how former students were doing, and these trips were always a lot of fun. I am proud to say that I found all of my former IVCC students doing quite well in their continuing math and science educations."
Seremak has a B.S. from Benedictine University and a Ph.D. from the University of Notre Dame.
While he was teaching at IVCC, he completed the classes and passed the test to become a Certified Public Accountant, and he is proud of the fact that he passed the CPA test the first time.
"Most people have to take it at least two or three times," he said.
Seremak has taught accounting at IVCC and has worked part time for H. & R. Block for the last 16 years.
"When I first started (teaching), we used blackboards and chalk, 16 mm. movies and slide rules," Seremak reminisced. "The computer and calculators are the really big change."
In his retirement, he plans to spend more time dabbling in the stock market and playing more golf. He played on a golf team in high school and college and carries a 9.3 handicap.
"Some of my best memories are from my teenage years when I worked as a caddie in and around Lombard, Ill.," he said.
His wife Dolores, who works for the Superintendent of Schools in LaSalle, learned to play golf after they got married. His wedding present to her was a new set of clubs..
They have three sons and two daughters: William Jr., a real estate professional in Wheaton; John, an accountant for Enterprise Rent-A-Car; Christopher, a student at NIU; Mary Jean, a librarian in Elmhurst; and Jennifer Whelton, a CPA and certified bank examiner in Glen Ellyn. They have two grandchildren.
Seremak has recently been working on his family's genealogy, and he plans on developing his family history as far back as he can go.
