When Lori Nall, the division chair of social sciences, was asked to comment on Harold Bauswell's retirement, she said, "I really hate to see him go." Nall, who has worked with Bauswell since 1995 said she is losing "a wonderful colleague."
Bauswell has been at IVCC for 30 years, teaching sociology, anthropology and social problems. Nall said she often heard students say Bauswell was the best teacher they'd had at IVCC.
Bauswell knows first hand what it is like to study at a community college because he started his college career at Muscatine Community College in Iowa. He then went to Truman University for his undergraduate studies and Central Missouri University for his masters.
He later earned graduate hours at NIU, ISU, U of I and the University of Minnesota.
His explanation for the variety of schools: "You have to take what you can, where you can."
Before coming to IVCC, he taught at a high school in Missouri for one year.
When asked why he became a teacher, he replied, without hesitation, his sociology teacher at Muscatine.
"I guess you could say he was my mentor," Bauswell said.
And teaching is a big part of his family life. His wife is an English teacher at Serena High School. His daughter Gina, who just graduated from Eastern, wants to go into teaching.
Prior to Eastern, his daughter attended IVCC and had her father as a teacher. Bauswell said she was grateful for coming to IVCC. As for having her as a student: "I gave her an F," he said with a laugh.
In addition to teaching, Bauswell has been involved in groups such as the National Honor Society of Sociology, NSSA, and ISA, and he added, "I have won a lot of golf tournaments."
What will he do after retirement?
"I plan on drinking a lot of beer and playing a lot of golf."
He and his wife have a condo in Florida and plan on spending quite a bit of time there. He will also be at IVCC, teaching part-time.
