GOLF: Linksters look for improvement
The mens golf team heads to College Station, Texas, from May 27 June 1 for the NJCAA National Championship ranked 13th in the nation. But according to coach Jim Moskalewicz, the Apache men are better than that.
"I really believe we are a top five team," Moskalewicz said. "When I look at some of the teams ranked over us, weve beaten some of them.
"I think there are about eight teams that could win it, and were one of them. If we have a good week we could win.
"When we went last year it was the same site," Moskalewicz said, " so I know what to expect as far as the golf course. Its very exciting. The kids are getting pumped up."
The Apaches earned the national bid by winning the Region IV championship at the end of the fall season in October, and theyve been honing their skills with a six-week spring season.
In two tournaments against NCAA teams this spring, the men placed third out of 16 teams. The first was at Bradley April 5 7 and the second at Western Illinois University April 12 14.
"Placing third is pretty good," Moskalewicz said. "Were playing a level of competition that is quite a bit higher than our at NCAA Division I."
In four conference matches this spring, the Apaches have finished first out of five each time.
"We are dominating the conference," the coach said. "We have such a strong group of players. Traveling when you are winning is a lot of fun, and weve been doing really well. Theres good team chemistry."
Moskalewicz said he expects his team to take home the conference trophy after the final conference match at 1 p.m. May 8 at Oak Ridge Golf Course, LaSalle.
After that match, the men can concentrate on their return trip to nationals.
Next season also looks good, according to the coach. Returning players will include Tim Puetz, Timothy Eckberg, Jesse Cavanaugh, Tony Andreoni and Jeremy DeBernardi.
