CORRECTION: Mingfeng Tong, an IVCC student from the People’s Republic of China, was incorrectly identified as an "exchange student" in the headline of the story about her published in the Feb. 22, 2001 Apache.

TRANSFER TALK: Representatives of colleges and universities will be on campus to talk with prospective transfer students on the following dates:

- March 22 -- Eureka, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

- March 28 -- NIU, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

- March 29 -- Lewis U, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

- April 3 -- St. Francis, 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

- April 3 -- Eureka, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

- April 9 -- Lewis U, 5 to 7 p.m.

- April 16 -- WIU, 9 a.m. to noon

- April 24 -- Eureka, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

All representatives will be in the main lobby.

DEADLINE EXTENDED: The IVCC Foundation scholarship application deadline has been extended to April 6. The scholarhips are for the 2001-2001 scool year and will be awarded by the end of May.

Applications are available in the Financial Aid Office, Counseling Center and the Foundation Office.

AND THE WINNER IS: The winner of the Phi Theta Kappa - River Currents poetry contest was Justin Smith for "My Nights Are So Long." Smith won a $25 gift certificate to the bookstore.

Jon Oelschlager took second place with "Rage," and Marla Buchanan third place with "Fish Food."

All three winning poems will be published in River Currents, IVCCs literary magazine.

WOMEN’S HEALTH SEMINAR: Motivational speaker Jayni Blackburn is the featured speaker at the Fourth annual Women’s Health Seminar March 31 in the Cultural Centre. Blackburn speaks at 9 a.m. and again at 2 p.m. at the day-long seminar titled, "In Search of Myself – Finding Balance in My Life." Blackburn is a licensed social worker and director of education for Mid-South Health Systems of Jonesboro, Ark.

Registration begins at 8 a.m., at 9 Blackburn speaks on "Searching for Balance: I’m Juggling as Fast as I Can," at 10:30 Fr. Dominic Garramone of St. Bede Academy speaks on "The Healing Hearth – What Kind of Bread Shall We Be." Lunch is from 11:30 to 12:45 in the cafeteria.

At 1 p.m. Dr. David Coynik, a Chicago dermatologist, addresses "The Path to Healthy Skin," and at 2 p.m. Blackburn closes the seminar with "Toward Balance: Good-bye Baggage, Hello Living."

"I think it would be fair to say that we’re very excited to have Jayni Blackburn back again this year," said organizer Bonnie Grusk. "It really promises to be a great day."

MIMIC FAIR: The annual MIMIC Fair is scheduled for May 2, from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the cafeteria. MIMIC, short for Making Industry Meaningful In College, is a Tech-Prep sponsored project that teams students in a variety of business programs, engineering and electronics to plan, design, produce and sell products, which will be on sale during the Fair. Instructors include Dorene Perez, Alice Steljes, Jim Gibson and Marge Hunt.

FINDING A JOB: IVCC’s 2001 job fair is scheduled for April 19 in the gym. This year JOBS 2001: A Career Odyssey will feature both day and evening hours with employers to be on campus from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 5 to 7 p.m.

Kathy Glascock, director of career planning and placement, said students should attend to talk with employers about full-time and part-time jobs as well as internships.

"Students should prepare now by getting their resume in order," she said.

More than 100 employers have attended the fair in past years. Information about employers who are attending is available in Career Planning and Placement.

STATE EVALUATION: English instructor Dr. Rose Marie Lynch served on a team for the Tech Prep Evaluation System for Illinois, reviewing programs in the Illinois Eastern Tech Prep Consortium Feb. 27 to March 1.

Dr. Lynch visited Olney Central College, Wabash Valley College, Lincoln Trail College and some of the high schools in the southern Illinois consortium.

WHO'S THE CUTEST? Health Professions faculty are vying for the title of Cutest Baby as a fund-raiser for the American Cancer Society Relay for Life. Baby pictures of the faculty are posted in the B-gallery and the ballot box is in B-209. Votes are a quarter each.

RELAY FOR LIFE: IVCC will again host the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life on June 22-23, 2001. Last year 142 teams and 307 cancer survivors participated in the event which raised over $100,000. Two IVCC teams, one from the nursing department and one from the library, participated last year.

FREE DENTAL X-RAYS: Dental assisting students will be taking full mouth dental x-rays, free of charge, for IVCC students and employees. Available appointment times include Mondays and Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to noon and Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2 to 4 p.m. Some evening appointments are also available.

Pat Pearson, dental assisting instructor, said the procedure would take approximately 45 minutes. The radiographs will be mailed to the patient's dentist.

Appointments can be made in B-214 or at extension 359 or 227.

TUTORING WORK: Students interested in being a peer tutor should contact Mary Turchi in the Reading Lab or call 224-0233. A tutor must have earned an A or B in the class. Pay is $5.15 per hour.

FRESHMEN NEEDED: The Apache is still accepting applications for the staff. Students are needed for news and sports writing, photography, graphic arts, cartooning, and page design.

The staff is also recruiting freshmen, interested in training for editorial positions for next year. All students, part-time and full-time, are eligible; no prior publishing experience is required.
