Steve Havera, a wildlife ecologist for the Illinois Natural History Survey, will give a presentation on man’s effects on the biology of the Illinois River at 7 p.m. March 15 in D-225.

Havera, a Peoria native, has done extensive research on waterfowl, eagles, squirrels, bluebirds, agriculture and the Illinois River. He currently is director of the Forbes Biological Station and the F.C. Bellrose Waterfowl Research Center at Havana and is on the faculty of Bradley, Western Illinois University and the University of Illinois.

Havera’s program focuses on five major changes that have been imposed on the river by society. They include: the Lake Michigan water diverted to the river in 1900, the domestic sewage and industrial waste from Chicago that was flushed into the river, formation of drainage and levee districts, construction of six dams, and the effects of sedimentation.

Havera’s presentation, rescheduled from Feb. 17, is sponsored by the IVCC Chemistry Club and science faculty as a part of the Rivers Project.
