Gay-straight alliance approved by SGA
Back to Apache home page By Jennifer NagleA new student group, a gay-straight alliance has been approved by the Student Government Association.
The group, the first of its kind for IVCC, has as its main goal creating a safe and supportive environment for gays, lesbians, bisexuals, and transgendered students.
One founding member, Julia Tybor, said "the group provides a chance to educate, support and celebrate the diversity of our student body."
Group advisors, Renee Jones, counselor, and Sue Isermann, chair of the business, engineering and math division, along with interested students held the first meeting on Feb. 28 to disuss goals and guidelines.
Member Jim Hall said, "It's a progressive movement that is long overdue on this campus."
Even before its approval by the SGA, organizers estimated there were 20 students interested in the group.
The group will be meeting on the first Wednesday and third Tuesday of every month:
