New equipment being brought into the Educational Fitness Center almost daily is part of a two-year plan to revamp the center.
Universal equipment, which is over ten years old, is being replaced by Magnum equipment. Center Director
The old equipment is being moved to local junior high schools, to Oglesby Washington School and to Ottawa Shepherd where it is being used for employee corporate fitness classes.
Center Director Tony Ruda said those corporate fitness classes are contributing to enrollment in fitness classes being the highest it has ever been.
Responding to rumors about the center expanding, Ruda said "any plans are still being discussed."
The new equipment is providing students, faculty and community members with more variety for workouts, Ruda said.
Freshman Sara Bernabei agreed: "The new equipment is good because it helps me to get a complete workout to get in shape for softball."
Kim Jalley, a senior at ISU, said she would rather use IVCCs fitness center than ISUs.
"I like the variety of equipment and the peacefulness better," she said.
Equipment to be added in the near future includes free weights, which Ruda described as "the number one concern from everyone."
He added that there have been suggestions for more aerobics and selectorize.
"We'd also like to see more corporate and more community members here," the director said, explaining that fitness classes are open to all students, college staff, and members of the area communities.
Students are also eligible to join the Fitness Club, Ruda said. The club has participated in various activities including a food pantry drive at Thanksgiving, 3-on - 3 basketball tournaments, and the IVCC cross country walk/run.
The group also examines careers in physical and health professions and members have spoken to various groups about health and wellness.
Officers are Kate Riva, president; Joe Sester, vice president; and Derek vicich, sergeant of arms.
