River Currents:  Literary magazine begins fund raising

River Currents, IVCCs literary magazine, is soliciting submissions and donations for its spring 2000 issue. For the first time, magazine organizers are asking arts-related businesses and potential patrons to provide some financial support for the annual publication.

English instructor Geoff Schmidt cited rising production costs and plans to expand to two issues per year in announcing the fund-raising efforts.

"River Currents has come a long way in the last five years," Schmidt said, "producing an annual literary magazine devoted solely to student work that is now professionally printed and incorporates artwork, with an expanded page count."

Schmidt noted that the staff sponsored an open microphone reading and a panel discussion last year. This year the staff plans four open microphone readings and another panel discussion.

"Next year they'd like to help bring fine poets and fiction writers to this campus, and perhaps publish River Currents twice during the academic year," he said.

Contributions and stories, poems, plays, creative essays or artwork can be submitted to Schmidt in A-315 or to Kim Radek in A-311.

Schmidt said written works and artwork would be considered anonymously, but anonymous submissions would not be accepted. To receive feedback on a work, a self-addressed stamped envelope should be enclosed.
